THE CIRCLE SQUARE

The circle square view to trampoline from the shouwburg theater

Year: 2018

A transformation project of the Schouwburgplein in Rotterdam. A square redesigned by Adriaan Geuze in 1996 is now an empty and lifeless space which people only use to cross to shorten the way to their destination. The square has a lot of potential, to its place and the amazing surrounding buildings like the theater.

For this project I worked with the book called, ‘’ A pattern language’’ from Christopher Alexander which discusses and describes a problem (A Pattern) and then offers a solution. This book allowed me to see and understand from different perspectives and guided me thought redesigning the Schouwburgplein.

The Circle Square: A square that is difference from its surrounding but compliments the space. A natural flow, a flow with an experience. A square that breathes, flows inside and outside. This experience starts from the stair seats in the middle of the square. The stair seats serve as the high point of the square and as a sitting area to watch a movie when there is a play on the façade of the theatre. The lines of the seats continue the floor of the square and flows inside the theatre to make a connection with the building. The different zones on the square have its own different programs like a playing area for children, tree places to relax in silence but also more social sitting areas these different zones create a livelier experience.

The zones are spread on the square which creates a natural path. The overflowing zones connects the surrounded buildings and cafes create a space which is more inviting to people.

The pattern on the ground  flows in to the interior of the theater to make a strong connection. In the interior the same concept for the square will follow.

Seperate workspaces will be created with curtains hanging down creating a private space.
